The Lagos State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has closed down 20 private security companies, including illegal ones in the last five days.
Mr Clement Adesuyi, the NSCDC Commandant of the state disclosed this last week in his office to journalists, adding that the companies included those whose licenses had expired but were yet to re-new them.
Adesuyi, who expressed worries over the operation of illegal security outfits in the state, stressed that such operation was dangerous to members of the public.
"Illegal security operation is dangerous to the community. Some people had been killed by some illegal security operators, whom they hired to guard them. In Lagos State, there would be no room for such illegality.
"One of the key functions of the NSCDC is to register, and inspect private security companies in Nigeria. We are to ensure that they comply with the regulations and having the right personnel. Private security is very essential all over the world.
That is why we must ensure we have the best. Every unregistered company will be sealed up, including those who have not renewed their license,'' Adesuyi noted. He said that in the next one week, more of such companies will be sealed warning the operators to regularise their papers before getting to them.
