(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/power-projects-300x206.jpg) The attention of the Ministry of Power was drawn to the publication that appeared in a section of the media which falsely alleged that the Ministers of Power had said that 120 million Nigerians are in darkness.
An issued statement signed by Mr. Timothy Oyedeji on behalf of the Minister said, "This publication misrepresented the statement of the Ministry of Power in the interview with the media immediately after the presentation of the Ministry's performance of 2012 to the Federal Executive Council. The publication falsely alleged that the Ministers had said that 120 million Nigerians are in darkness."
In putting the records straight, Oyedeji said, "The Ministers' statement was aimed at investors to sell the good investment opportunities in the Nigerian electricity sector. It was strictly in this context that the Ministers mentioned the huge market potential of 120 million Nigerians."
Oyedeji's statement further said that "The Ministry intends to continue to present the true situation of power supply in the country, consistent with the administration's policy thrust on transparency and accountability. But we call on all relevant sections of the media to adhere to the ethics and tenets of professional journalism.
The Ministry also expects that the media should cross check their facts with the relevant officials in the Ministry before going to print to avoid unnecessary misrepresentation of the facts."
