Contrary to speculation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria yesterday denied claims that Kano is not among the cargo terminals designated to serve as outlets for the export of tonnes of perishable and non-perishable agricultural produce that abound in the country.
Speaking to our reporter in Lagos, the General Manager, Corporate Communication of FAAN Mr. Yakubu Dati said the Federal Government will provide infrastructure for air cargo villages on a public-private-partnership (PPP) at major international airports and promote Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano as transshipment hubs.
According to Dati, "The FG will provide infrastructure for air cargo villages, which will include multi-modal transport, cargo terminals, cold storage centers, automatic storage and retrieval systems, mechanized transport of cargo, dedicated express cargo terminals with airside and city side openings, computerization and automation,on a public-private-partnership (PPP) at major international airports and promote Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano as transshipment hubs.
He further explained that the transformation agenda of the government provides a platform for a dynamic aviation sector with an integrated aviation master plan to develop aerotropolis, cargo villages, initially at ten airport locations in the country and for free export-processing zones in Nigeria, in order to maximize the economic potentials of the nation's goal of being a leading emerging economy in 2020 as air cargo and logistics operations are vital or competitive trade and investment in Nigeria.
Also, the Minister, Stella Oduah reiterated that effort to boost the cargo business and export in the country alongside the re-modelling and building of airport terminals was responsible for securing N106 billion from the Chinese bank to build about 11 Cargo/Perishable materials terminals, with six of them to be sited at airports in the North.
