Members of the 2012 Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps scheme who have just concluded their one year national service have been challenged to hold on to those tenets imbibed during the service year and use them to forge ahead in whatever endeavour they later engage in.
Ogun State helmsman, Senator Ibikunle Amosun threw this challenge at the M.K.O Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta at the passing out parade of corps members posted to the State.
Governor Amosun, represented by his Youth and Sports Commissioner, Mr. Gbenga Otenuga, also charged them to engage only in activities that could promote unity, peaceful co-existence and social harmony.
“Take up the difficult challenges of nation building and strengthening of the legacies of an indivisible Nigeria, wherever you may find yourselves. As you move into the larger society, let your belief in the nation come first before self” Amosun charged.
He described the 40 year old NYSC scheme as a potent instrument for grassroots-oriented development which had discharged its core mandate of promoting national unity and integration, adding that it remained the foremost agency for driving the accelerated achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Amosun assured that in realization of the vital roles which youths played in nation building, his administration would continue to pursue youth-oriented and development programmes to enable them perform their duties as leaders of the future affirming that prompt response would always be given to the infrastructural, logistic and utility needs of the state NYSC secretariat.
On his part, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Otenuga whose address was delivered by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Mr. Segun Adesanya commended the outgoing corps members for their modest contribution to the mission to rebuild through their various Community Development Service programmes.
He admonished them to internalize the sense of discipline, culture of hard work, endurance and dedication learnt while the service year lasted for the Nigerian cause.
Speaking later in an interview, two of the outgoing corps members, Ngene from Enugu state and Segun Akinduro from Ondo State described their stay in the State as eventful and called on the Federal Government to ensure peace and security of lives and property, so that corps members would be at ease to serve in any part of the country.
