The biometric data capture exercise which the Ogun State Government conducted on its workforce last year helped it save the sum of N100m monthly which would have been paid to ghost workers and those who should have retired from the civil service.
Commissioner for Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun stated this today in Abeokuta while briefing journalists on the activities and achievements of her ministry since the Senator Ibikunle Amosun administration came on board two years ago.
She said government embarked on the exercise which captured 30,035 civil servants and 18,478 SUBEB staff to ensure value for money and probity, having realized that payroll related expenses gulped over 64% of the State’s total recurrent expenditure in 2012.
Affirming that her Ministry remained committed to repositioning the State’s finances, Adeosun declared that the focus of the present administration in the State is to grow its current average 3bn Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to 5bn.She recalled that when the Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration came on board two years ago, the State’s average monthly IGR stood at about N750m, saying that government had successfully grown this to N3bn owing partly to the visible massive developmental programmes embarked upon across the State which made people who ordinarily would not have paid their taxes do so voluntarily.
“The ongoing programme of infrastructural renewal especially in the areas of roads and schools continues to elicit voluntary compliance from Ogun State residents. In addition, we are using technology and sensitization to ensure that every employer of labour remit taxes due from their employees” She noted.
