The gale of suspension of governors on the platform of the PDP by the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has raised deep concerns among its chieftains and stalwarts in the party's northwest zone.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had in the last two weeks suspended Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi and his Sokoto State counterpart, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda.
In both instances, the party had cited insubordination to the authority of the Rivers State executive and national secretariat of the party, respectively, as reasons for suspending the governors.
National chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur had during the week given indication that it would no longer tolerate indiscipline and anti-party activities on the part of any of its members holding elective office in the country.
Besides Amaechi and Magatakarda, more governors on the party's platform, particularly from the northwest would soon be reprimanded.
But Sunday Sun checks revealed that stalwarts of the party are miffed that the leadership of the party which recently embarked on reconciliation moves across the geopolitical zones in the country has now adopted the policy of annihilation of its governors.
A party chieftain from the zone who spoke with Sunday Sun in confidence accused the Bamanga Tukur-led NWC of the party of political naivety as he noted that the motivation driving the merger deal of the main opposition parties is the support they believe they could galvanise from northwest and southwest.
"The logic driving APC is the votes of southwest and northwest. Their permutation is that with votes from the two zones, they can turn the table against the PDP in 2015. I expect the national working committee to be concerned about how to bolster its support base rather than undermining it. This isn't reconciliation, but confrontation. They are doing all these because they think there is no alternative to PDP, but all this high-handedness will create alternatives to PDP," the party chieftain submitted.
