The Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria has called for the independence of the state electoral commissions as a way of improving their performance.
A statement on Sunday said the forum made the call in a communiqué issued at its National Delegates Conference held in Katsina, Katsina State.
The forum said instead of scrapping SIECs, the members of the National Assembly should amend the provisions of the 1999 Constitution to guarantee the autonomy of the commissions.
The communiqué, which was signed by its Chairman and Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, retired Justice Afolabi Adeyinka and the Forum's secretary, Dr. Hannatu Biniya, also called for more financial support for FOISECON.
The body said, "All members of FOISECON must endeavour to undertake the delineation of wards in their various states to improve on the turnout of eligible voters during elections."
Members of the forum also resolved to make the delegates conference an annual event which would be known as Annual National Delegates Conference.
The Punch
Independence in that aspect of election is very cool because it might have a lot of advantage. I totally agree with the fact.
