The former Director of Music and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pa Benedict Elide Odiase, is dead.
He was aged 79.
Odiase, who composed the national anthem, died on Tuesday night at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, after a brief illness.
According to a family source, condolence register has been opened at his Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos home and that burial arrangements will be announced later.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday commiserated with the family.
A statement issued yesterday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said President Jonathan believed that the late police officer, who was the Director of the Nigerian Police Band until he retired in 1992, would always be remembered and honoured whenever the national anthem which captures the vision of Nigeria as a great nation is played.
