Title: Emergency rule in states timely – Presidency
Post by: Punch on Jun 17, 2013, 01:31 AM
One month after the declaration of state of emergency in three states, the Federal Government on Sunday reviewed the action and declared it as timely.

It also commended youths in the affected states for collaborating with the military to rid their states of members of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The states where President Goodluck Jonathan declared state of emergency are Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states.

The declaration, however, did not affect the functions of elected government officials in these states.

Even at that, the Presidency said the result recorded in the past one month was re-assuring.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated this in a statement.

Okupe said reports from the affected states indicated that members of the Boko Haram were seriously loosing the battle.

He said, "One month into the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in some states in the north eastern part of Nigeria, reports from Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states are reassuring as normalcy is gradually being restored as a result of the gallant efforts of the Armed forces and other security agencies as well as the co operation of the local communities.

"Markets are being re opened, children are returning to schools, sacked communities are being re-inhabited while commercial activities in major towns in the affected states are approaching pre-insurgency period.

"Perhaps, most gratifying is the new development where citizens, especially youths, are now fully co operating with security agencies to hunt down these insurgents and hand them over to the military."

He added, "Without doubt, these youths are the new national heroes, who have risen up to the occasion in an unprecedented patriotic fashion to work together with their government by going after their tormentors.

"This is heart-warming and clearly indicative of an awakened consciousness of civic responsibility."
