From Ahmed Abubakar, Dutse

Clerics have been charged to participate in active politics rather than being passive.

Special Adviser to Governor of Jigawa on Religious and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Isa Ahmed Duniya Bahutu, gave the charge yesterday at the closing ceremony of a four-day workshop organized for the training of first aid members of the Jama'atu Izalatil Bid'ah wa'iqamatis Sunnah sect in Dutse.

Bahutu said, "it is not enough for religious clerics to confine themselves within the circle of criticism but must also participate in active politics so as to contest elective possitions like any other person.

"It is clear that the religious leaders are desirous for change in the polity but warned that the change may only come through their participatory roles in the country's democracy."

He said politicians were often perceived as thieves by some clerics but when asked to join politics to effect a change they often reject that adding that one cannot change a system from the outside.

On his part, the National Chairman of the JIBWIS, Malam Abdullahi Bala Lau, declared that it is disheartening to note that apart from the voluntary services the organization is providing in emergency cases they are yet to have a single ambulance.

He said the sect had over the years been operating without any utility vehicle that to assist in conveying accident victims to the hospital.
