More condolences on Monday poured in for former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, over the death of his mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji.
Among groups and individuals, who commiserated with the Tinubu family, were the Action Congress of Nigeria, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and the former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.
Mogaji died in Lagos on Saturday at the age of 96.
The ACN, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, urged Tinubu to take solace in the woman's life accomplishments.
The ACN said, "Despite her old age, her instincts remained sharp till the end, and she paid a close attention to what was going on around her, including the realignment of progressive forces aimed at making life better for the citizens, the plight of whom she made her passion throughout her lifetime.
"As recently as a few weeks ago, she still inquired about the progress of the realignment, a clear indication that she stayed true to her passion of ensuring better life for all even till the end."
It said the greatest indication of her concern for the less privileged was the fact that anytime the interest of her members – the market men and women – collided with that of the government during her son's tenure as governor, she sided with members of the association.
ACN added she would be remembered for her dominance at the Association of Nigerian Market Men and Women for about half a century, during which she fought for the interest of the association.
It added, "That she presided over such a massive body for such a length of time without soiling her reputation and that of her respectable lineage is a great testimony to her uprightness, decency, integrity, generosity, loyalty and firm principles.
"Over the years, those attributes also came in handy for her as she refused to be lured by anti-progressive forces, shunning whatever offer that could compromise such rare attributes. Having availed herself so creditably in her earthly sojourn, we pray the Good Lord to grant her a well-deserved rest and protect those she left behind."
Also the party in the United Kingdom, in a statement by the Chairman of its Steering Commitee and the Secretary of the party, Dr. Philip Idaewor and Mr. Femi Durodola, described the deceased as a rare gem.
It said, "We commiserate with our leader and the entire family on the irreplaceable loss of the rare gem that mama was to us all.
"Though she is gone, we are comforted and take solace that she is gone to be with Almighty Allah."
The party in Ogun State said she was an exemplary leader, who championed the course of women in commerce.
A statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sola Lawal, said the dynamism with which the late Mogaji led as President-General of Nigerian Market Men and Women "made her a voice to be reckoned with regarding market issues as well as socio-economic and political affairs of the country."
The statement added, "Mama was a repository of knowledge and wisdom, which she readily shared with successive governments nationwide, thus making her a veritable tool in Nigeria's development, even in old age.
"She was a stabiliser, mobiliser, patriotic/detribalised leader and mother of all and she combined these qualities to raise an icon of true democracy in Tinubu, who has been in the vanguard of political emancipation of the South-West.
"We therefore take solace in the fact that Asiwaju, who readily made himself available to her tutelage, is still around to champion the ideals she stood for."
Amosun said Mogaji's death was a great loss to the country.
The governor stated this in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs. Funmi Wakama.
He said the deceased led a fulfilled life and her footprints would stand the test of time.
Amosun acknowledged Mogaji contribution to raising Tinubu, who he described as one of the foremost political leaders in the country.
He recalled that the deceased sterling qualities, exemplary character and contributions to human development led to her being conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Human Letters Honoris Causa by Ahmadu Bello University in 2012."
Igbinedion described her as "a bridge builder".
Igbinedion said she left a legacy of philantropy, hard work and quality leadership.
He also described her as "a true mother of democracy and a great symbol of womanhood."
The Punch
He deserves to be consoled. The news would never be what he was expecting at all. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
