Post by: Punch on Jun 18, 2013, 11:31 PM
Permanent Secretary/Auditor-General, Office of the Auditor-General for Local Governments, Lagos State, Mr. Mubasir Hassan, has asked local governments and local council development areas in the state to make prudent use of their resources.

Hassan said this during the commencement of the 5th Edition of the Projects Inspection and Monitoring Exercise at Mushin LG on Friday.

He said the value for money audit and its attendant reports were peculiar to Lagos, stressing that the development were part of the measures to proactively respond to the yearnings of Lagosians for people-oriented programmes.

Hassan said, "People desire programmes that will not only ensure transparency in the use of public funds but also provide effective parameters for assessing performances of local governments.

"Reports of past editions were widely accepted and therefore the report of this edition will not depart from laid down standards for us to achieve the goal of this exercise."

Hassan assured the Babatunde Fashola administration that his office would continue to keep the LGs and LCDAs in the state on their toes towards ensuring the mass delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people.

He said appraisal of projects executed by Mushin within the period under review demonstrated beyond doubts that the LGs in the state were working.

In his remarks, Chairman, Mushin LG, Mr. Olatunde Adepitan, said his administration was determined right from the outset to make giant strides in line with the manifestoes of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

Adepitan said, "Using my background as a classroom teacher, we called a stakeholders' meeting to inquire from the residents, projects that could have direct impact on their lives.

"Reports from all the wards visited formally and informally indicated that roads construction should top our agenda in order to improve the economic activities of residents. However, in our resolve to ensure that all roads are motorable, we started a scheme, tagged, 'Operation Fill the Potholes'. This scheme has helped a great deal in making our roads motorable."
