Also speaking, Dr. Genevieve Cause said that the number of students taking interest in the study of the subject is encouraging. He also appreciated the commitment of the government to promote the teaching and learning of the subject, and expressed the hope that French government would give a nod for the 3rd phase of the project.

The out-going Nigeria- French Language Project Manager, Mr. Jean-Philippe Roy, said that although a lot have been made to promote the study of French language in the country, the dearth of teachers to teach the subject, particularly at the basic level, is a big challenge.

While commending the effort of government towards the teaching and learning of the subjects, Mr. Roy said that French language is important means of communication in Nigeria viewed from the backdrop of its leadership position in Africa, noting that many of the neighbouring countries use French language as means of official communication.

Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa'i, thanked the team for the visit, and also expressed appreciation to the French Government for the support to promote the teaching and learning of the subject in the country.

The Minister noted the importance of French language internationally, adding that Nigeria being surrounded by Franco-phone countries made the learning of the language very significant. This is even as she said the 2nd phase of the project was beneficial and looks forward to the 3rd phase of the project.
