The Federal Government has been called upon not to privatize river basins in the country.

The call was made by the Managing Director of Upper Niger River Development Authority [UNRBDA], Professor Paul Marley while speaking to news men in Minna, Niger State.

The Managing Director pointed out that instead of privatizing the river basins in the country, they should be properly funded to enable then carry out their mandates.

He was of the opinion that should the existing and abandoned projects of the River Basins Authority be completed it would go a long way in boosting food production in the country.

Professor Marley, who was speaking against the backdrop of the Minister of Agriculture's recent agitation for the privatization of river basins in the country, said there are no basis for such move and queried, "How will a dam with an Irrigation Scheme attached to it, and which is located in rural area with beneficiaries who are predominantly farmers be privatized."

He appealed to the Federal on Government to have a rethink on this plan for the good of the country.
