The Federal Government yesterday began moves to check corruption in the Nigeria Police
salary system by integrating its payment and personnel information system with the Ministry of Finance.
Speaking at a training workshop for the police in Abuja yesterday, a representative of the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs. Fatima Nana Mede, said that the move would eradicate all forms of
corruption associated with police salaries.
Mede who said that over 300,000 police officers are currently on government payroll, noted that the measure would also rid the force of incidences of ghost workers and other persons who are not entitled to police salary.
She further disclosed that the government was set to deploy auditors to every police station and formation to carry out physical audit of the policemen across the federation.
According to her, government officials had been engaged in age and documentation falsification and have continued to receive salaries even when they should have been retired from government service.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, urged the participants to ensure that they embrace the mechanism of the new salary system pointing out that intentional mistakes which could lead to corruption would not be tolerated by the police management.
