From Mustapha Isah Kwaru, Maiduguri
Some gallant traders at the popular Gamboru market in Maiduguri metropolis, on Wednesday foiled an attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents as they rounded up and arrested six gunmen, before handing them over to the operatives of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF), witnesses told newsmen.
This came even as spokesman for the insurgent group, Abu Zinnari declared war on the youth vigilante group popularly known as 'civilian JTF', who are engaged in the massive manhunt for the fleeing militants.
It was further gathered that pandemonium had ensued in the market around 3 pm when some traders sighted six young men with objects suspected to be rifles, hidden under their garments.
The gunmen who were said to be on a revenge mission against some youth for allegedly exposing their colleagues to security forces, walked to market and pretended to be customers, before being spotted by some eagle-eyed traders.
"We were alerted by some traders when he saw them and we immediately trailed and rounded them up. We caught them with our hands before they attempted to bring out their guns; after we succeeded in disarming them we manhandled them before handing them soldiers," an eyewitness who declined identification said.
