The All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has criticised the recent presentation of car and cash gifts to traditional rulers by Governor Peter Obi and Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, a governorship aspirant.
In a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Okelo Madukaife, the APC said the gesture coming at the tail end of the government of Obi and APGA in the state as well as when the governorship election was due, amounted to a Greek Gift.
The APC said while it agreed with Ubah that Obi's gift had political undertone, the party criticised Ubah for similar gifts he had presented to traditional rulers in the state.
An aide to Ubah had criticised Obi's gifts to the traditional rulers saying, "The motive of Obi in giving the gifts at the tail end of his administration, which is well known to Anamba people, is to curry favour from traditional rulers and Anambra people to so as to have the leeway to install a governor for the state in 2014."
Madukaife said, "We also agree that the governor's Greek Gift is a reaction to the visit of the traditional rulers to Lagos in which they were given loads of cash gift by Ubah, which in our estimation has neither brought honour to our state nor dignity to the reverence of traditional institution.
"We nonetheless share the optimism with Ubah that this gimmick will not work as the people of Anambra State have vowed to resist any form of imposition of a governor on them."
