Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun State command said it had handed over an officer (names withheld), who allegedly killed a 45-year-old woman, Fausat Oyede, to the police for further investigation.
The command's Area Controller, Ade Dosunmu, told newsmen in Idiroko on Friday that it became expedient for the command to hand over the officer to the police, having interviewed him following the incident.
Violence broke out in Idi-Iroko last Thursday over the incident, but the timely intervention of operatives of the Customs and the Police, brought the situation under control.
Flanked at the briefing by the deceased family members, Dosunmu said the incident that led to the death of the mother of five was unfortunate.
He explained that the killer officer shot at a vehicle conveying the deceased and other passengers, claiming that the vehicle was carrying contraband goods.
Dosunmu said, "It is an unfortunate incident. In the early hours of Thursday, one of our patrol teams led by Adewole was on patrol at Ilashe and Ilara area.
After due diligence on that road, seizures were made and at 4.30am, the officer in charge of that patrol took time to rest, while he handed over to his 2 I/C.
"But, unfortunately, one of the officers acting alone, shot at a vehicle which he claimed was laden with contraband goods. He attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop. He aimed at the vehicle's tyre but, unfortunately, the bullet rebound on the ground and hit the passenger, thereby causing the death."
