The Patronage of People With Pets Is An Important Asset to Hotels That Cater to Such Travelers

During the time of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden, New York, which concluded last week, the 1,700-room Hotel Pennsylvania (http://www.frommers.com/hotels/hotel_index.cfm?destID=21) in New York was full down to the last room. The very same hotel enjoys unusually high occupancy rates during the rest of the year as well, for what many people claim is a special reason: its friendly policies towards people who travel with pets. The Hotel Pennsylvania is the only such property I know that maintains a Pooch Relations P.R. Official, a certain Jerry Grymek (tel. 416/918-2043), whose duty it is to spread word of the dog-friendly attitudes of the "pup-ular" five-paw Hotel Pennsylvania.

Years ago, when the deluxe Plaza Hotel in New York had a substantial number of hotel rooms (it has been recently transformed into a partial condo residence), that luxurious lodging maintained a pet concierge, a person offering substantial assistance (dog daycare, dog walking, etc.) to the many celebrities who insisted during that era on always bringing along their pets on trips.  All of this is by way of reminder that persons who travel with pets are an important segment of the travel industry, and one that is often neglected by hotels and tourist officials. There are several pet magazines (Modern Dog is the big one), pet-traveling websites (like www.fidofriendly.com (http://www.fidofriendly.com)), pet-related guidebooks (RV Parks & Campground Guide for Dogs is one); and he who pays them no attention does not enjoy the special patronage that pet owners are able to bestow.
