The Federal Government on Tuesday stressed the need for the involvement of state and local governments as well as traditional institutions in the dissemination of information on climate change to the grassroots.
Vice President Namadi Sambo said this while receiving the first interim report of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on National Framework for Application of Climate Services at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the committee must involve the people at the grass roots in planning measures to stem climate scourge in the country.
"What are the specific responsibilities of states, local governments and traditional institutions? They have a huge responsibility in this action. The responsibility of Inland Water Ways should also be involved. With this committee now, there should not be information coming from different channels, all the information should be collated by NIMET and be given to the public," he said.
The Vice President handed down a one-week ultimatum to the committee to prepare a final report on climate services, which would be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Economic Council.
He said it was important that the issue be resolved on time because time is of the essence as July would bring much rainfall in the country.
