Post by: Punch on Jun 26, 2013, 11:31 PM
Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning the illegal detention of people by the police and other security agencies in the state.

The Assembly, therefore, called on the police high command and the top brass of other security agencies to take urgent steps to stop further arbitrary detention of innocent citizens.

The lawmakers made the resolution at a plenary following a motion by Olusola Sonuga and seconded by Bankole Akanbi.

The motion bordered on illegal detention and maltreatment of innocent people in police cells and formations in the state.

The legislators, including the Majority Leader, Israel Jolaoso; the Minority Leader, Job Akintan; Olakunle Oluomo, AdijatĀ  Adeleye, Victor Fasanya and Babatunde Edunjobi, also called for effective administration of the justice system by relevant authorities.

Noting that many atrocities had been committed via illegal detention, they urged the commissioner of police as well as relevant authorities to conduct regular checks on police cells and formations in the state.

They stated that the illegal detention of people was an issue that must be resolved through the ongoing constitutional amendment.

They also noted that there was the need to strengthen the administration of justice in the country with a view to protecting the rights of the citizens.

Sonuga particularly said there was need to stop the arbitrary detention of people since a suspect remained innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

He urged the police hierarchy to visit their formations in order to look into the records of those in detention.

The Assembly Speaker, Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, expressed optimism that the implementation of the resolution by relevant authorities would enhance the quick dispensation of justice and check human rights abuses.
