Title: ‘Embrace evangelism like early clerics’
Post by: Punch on Jul 08, 2013, 04:02 AM
The Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Job, on Sunday urged Christians to rededicate themselves to the mission of evangelism as the early church.

He  stated this in Akure during the 50th priestly ordination anniversary of the Bishop Emeritus, Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Most Rev.  Francis Alonge.

Speaking on 'Priesthood in Cultures and Traditions of Peoples', Job decried a situation where priests "carved territories" for themselves.

He noted that by their calling, they should be ready to accept postings to any part of the world without grudges.

He said, "Alonge is the first Catholic to play the organ at a Mass on Western Nigeria Television  at Ibadan.

"As an English teacher, he has a penchant for details-paragraphing, punctuations, tenses and spellings.

"In fact, he is a perfectionist and of course, such a person does not have it easy with careless individuals."

The cleric added  that the host used his "Irish and American connections" to contribute immensely to the development and growth of the diocese.

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko described the host as a man worthy of emulation.

Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Yemi Mahmud, the governor said Alonge "is a humble and determined teacher and preacher."

Also, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi described Alonge as a true son of Ekiti State, who had made the state proud.

Alonge urged the congregation to submit themselves to God, saying, "Once you say 'Yes' to God, do not say 'No'".

Meanwhile, the Diocese of Akure, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has concluded plans to construct the Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi Retreat Home in Akure.

Gbonigi, who retired 12 years ago, had said God gave him a vision to build a home for Christians to use.

However, the new Bishop of the diocese, Rt. Revd. Simeon Borokini, on Sunday said the church would donate the home to Gbonigi, as a mark of respect.

Borokini stated this at the First Session of the 11th Synod of the church at the St. David's Cathedral, Ijomu, Akure.

The cleric said the diocese would raise N6m to build the chapel rather than allow the retired cleric to seek donations to construct the edifice.
