Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has urged Nigerians to return to agriculture, noting that the redemption of the country lies in the sector. The governor disclosed this yesterday in Abeokuta when he received in his office the Yewa Descendants Union, United Kingdom/ Ireland chapter, led by its President, Mr Segun Ebo.
Amosun reflected that the golden era of the nation was when agriculture was its mainstay, lamenting that the neglect of the sector had led to poverty, unemployment and backwardness."This is why our administration is taking the issue of agriculture seriously. We are not just encouraging our people to return to farming but providing the right environment such as purchase of land clearing and preparing equipment on a massive scale for mechanised agriculture, revival of Farm Settlement Scheme, opening up the rural areas through road construction, among others," the governor said.
He stated that the 107km Ilara-Ijoun-Oja Odan-Ilase road, which cuts across four local councils in Ogun West senatorial district, would boost agricultural activities in the area and reduce the cost of living in the state. He announced that the newly introduced luxury buses would begin to ply Ogun West roads in due course. He commended the Union for its plan to hold the first Yewa Day in the United Kingdom, explaining that it was a way to create awareness about "our culture and give back to our roots".
Speaking earlier, the President of Yewa Descendants Union, Mr Segun Ebo, lauded the development strides of the Amosun administration, noting that "we have come home and have seen all what the governor told us while in UK."The Olu of Imasai, Oba Gbadebo Oni, who attended the event with other monarchs from Yewa, praised the governor for changing the status of Abeokuta from an old town to a city, "which is befitting for a state capital".
