Title: How I overcame the demons of music –KSB
Post by: Mirror on Jul 13, 2013, 07:31 AM
This year marks fifteen years of KSB as a musician. She told ENTERVAGANZA how she intends to celebrate the milestone and how she achieved it.

How do you feel that you are fifteen years on stage this year?

It still looks like a dream to me, I'm telling you, because it does not look like it was fifteen years ago I started, with the kind of freshness and the grace that is moving me on. It's not been by my power, or my talent, it's been by sheer grace and the strengthening and the covering of God, because I've been through a lot of things, you know, and I came to realise that music has double phase.

There's the first phase and the second phase. And between the first and second phases is the middle where you have the demons because music carries its own demons and they try everybody, whether gospel or secular.

They will want to swallow you. And it's the same thing that Fela had to fight that made him change his name from Ransome-Kuti and say I'm Anikulapo. So when you can fight it and you can win it, then you are stronger, a new person comes up, then you know you have music, then you can do music, so I passed that first phase, I succeeded, and now this is the second phase, and it came with a freshness, a new talent, new energy, vibration, even youthfulness, so it feels so great and as if I only just started.

What did you do to overcome the demons that you mentioned?

It's God, just hanging to God. If I say just God alone, everybody hangs to God, it is the scriptures. I had to find the scriptures in the Bible to use to be able to face music, because music existed before Adam and Eve, it existed before Jesus, it is as old as God, so there's this demon, and it was God that cut him off, and so when He cut him off, anybody that He gives music to, he would say sing something for me, then he would say ehn, you think you can succeed, so that's why people are on a lot of things, some smoke weed, some womanise, you know, a lot of things, so that they can conquer it. Look at Majek Fashek in his glory and then look at the aftermath.

A lot of drinking, he couldn't conquer it, it's God that can. Look at Whitney too, the first half and the second half that the drugs had been introduced. So it's the scriptures that can conquer it.

But would you say the demon is the pressure that comes with every career or a spiritual sort?

Look, they will always tell you that musician, he has to conquer his demons. Music is a spirit. And when you talk of demons, they are not people with horns and all that. It's the spirit that comes with music. There are three Ws attached to music: weed, wine and women. If you can identify those demons, when the pressure comes, you can stick to God and fresh music will come. But some need the weed to get fresh music, some need the wine or women and those elements do come out in their music.

How are you celebrating your milestone 15th anniversary?

I'm definitely going to have a concert and I'm hoping to launch a book, The Turnaround Experience. There will also be the Turnaround Moment With KSB, and we'll be taking it from church to church, because people say they don't see me in the church again. I just released a new video, Bragado, in which I was bragging about what God has done for me. I'm also releasing a song I did with MI, and there's also a concept I have for women.

Before, we used to celebrate just the First Lady of the country, but now we celebrate first ladies at the state and local levels and this has helped to better women's lives as those women are able to introduce things to make women better. So I want to encourage young women not to hawk their bodies as they too can become a First Lady tomorrow. And that's what I'm enjoying about democracy, people in power keep changing as it is a four-year cycle.

So you have political aspirations?

No, no, no. Regarding first ladies, it is the man that has fought the war, that went to the war front. The woman's own is just to enjoy the office of the First Lady attached to him, enjoy the estacodes and all the travelling.

Why are many artists quitting their record labels nowadays?

In some cases, the contract expired, and the artist did not come out to say that it had expired. In other cases, the record labels are novices, they don't know the nitty-gritty of running a label. They say we put so much money into you so whatever you make, fifty for us, fifty for you.

And because the artists are anxious and excited, they want to go out there and perform, they agree. But later, when the thing gets big, then they realise that ahn-ahn, you've been cheating me all along and so they can revolt. Then also, a situation where you have a lot of artists and you don't know how to manage. Like you have four or five artists and it's only one or two getting all the shows. Others will feel that they are not getting attention, their career is not moving, their destiny is stagnant, so they get bitter and take a walk, so you know, there are a lot of factors.

I don't understand how 'demons' link with 'music'. KSB just says some strange things at times that u won't easily understand. Thank God for her life though.
