: 2011 Postgraduate Bursaries for Nuclear Energy in South Africa

In an effort to address nuclear skills for the envisaged 9,600 MWe of nuclear power generation to be commissioned from 2023 to 2030, the South African Nuclear Human Asset Research Programme (SANHARP) hereby invites applications from full time students interested in the postgraduate studies. There are 8 Honours, 6 Masters and 5 PhD competitive bursaries available for successful students.

These bursaries are available for study in the following areas:
•   Mechanical Engineering            
•   Electronics Engineering
•   Electrical Engineering
•   Chemical Engineering
•   Civil Engineering
•   Nuclear Engineering
•   Physics
•   Metallurgy/Materials Science or Engineering
•   Applied Mathematics
•   Chemistry
•   Computer Science
•   Biochemistry

The bursaries for the Postgraduate Studies will apply to the following research areas:
•   Advanced analysis methods, validations and test facilities
•   Advanced fuel development
•   Advanced materials & mathematical modelling. Advanced graphite ageing etc.
•   Burst free pressure vessel. Almost zero catastrophic failure probability.
•   Ceramic rod control development
•   Design codes and standards
•   Development of water free reactor cavity cooling system
•   Heat exchanger development, heat transfer test facility, etc.
•   Hot duct liners for 1200ºC gas temperature.
•   Magnetic scrubber. Validation of magnetic scrubber design
•   Mathematical modelling of all systems and materials
•   Nuclear engineering and applied radiation sciences
•   Turbines with 1200ºC rating
•   Waste minimization: Microbiology
•   Nuclear radiation science
•   Radiation protection and safety
•   Radioactive waste
•   Other.

Values of the Bursary per annum:
Total grant for Honours degree   =   R 68,000.00
Total grant for an MSc degree   =   R  85,000.00
Total grant for a PhD      =   R100,000.00
Once-off computer allowance    =   R    7,000.00   

The grant covers the following allowances:
1.   Full tuition fees
2.   Accommodation
3.   Transport
4.   Meals
5.   Pocket money

All eligible students must have a supervisor(s) and a research proposal approved by SANHARP. On completion of the studies, students are required to serve the nuclear sector for the number of years they were sponsored.
