Sam Kujiyat, the chairperson of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State chapter, is of the opinion that the masterminds of last month's post-election violence in some states in the north aimed to overthrow the civilian government.
Last month's post-election violence in the state claimed several lives and properties worth millions of naira. What is your take on the incident?
I have said it before and I will still repeat it anywhere that this was not a religious crisis at all; it was a political crisis and the signs were there all along. The manner in which the campaigns were conducted in Kaduna State and even in many other parts of the north where rival political groups resorted to destroying each other's posters and billboards and smashing of even offices; that was a pointer.
And some of the political leaders were urging their followers to ensure they protect their votes and that if anybody tried to steal it, they should lynch the person. All these were being said and it reflected on the pages of newspapers. So we thought that government and security agencies would take these things into cognisance and take adequate measures to ensure there was security to contain the situation. But, alas, we witnessed what happened.
