David Ginola called for stability at former club Newcastle United on Wednesday, after another summer of upheaval at the Premier League side.

Newcastle last month appointed ex-manager Joe Kinnear as director of football, a move which was greeted with widespread derision by fans of the club, one of the great underachievers in England's top flight.

The shock move to bring in Kinnear appeared to undermine manager Alan Pardew, who last year signed an eight-year contract with the club.

"It's always been the case there. As soon as you think someone will be there for two, three, four years...," Ginola told AFP.

"It's unbelievable. This is Newcastle. If I was involved at Newcastle I would be looking at stability, building the club up from scratch. They need stability."

Former French winger Ginola, a crowd favourite at St James' Park from 1995 to 1997, admitted that he had been taken aback by the move to bring in Kinnear again.

"I was a bit surprised, but things move so fast in football and there are always surprises," Ginola said in Hong Kong, where he is an ambassador for the Barclays Asia Trophy.

"Sometimes it is not the obvious choice. Now he's at the club, and for the people of Newcastle, we have to wait and see what he is going to do.

"We need to wait for the results (before we judge): how are they going to do, how are they going to play, who are they going to bring on board."
Newcastle Football Club can improve on themeselves next season. They have the players to do the carry out the job anytime anyday.
