Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal has implored Nigerians to be patient with the National Assembly on the ongoing constitution amendment exercise.
Speaking at a Ramadan lecture organised by Muslim and Christian Youth Forum in Kaduna, Tambuwal noted that only constructive contributions from Nigerians will produce a people oriented constitution.
Tambuwal who submitted that the controversy trailing certain votes in favour of some particular clause of the country's constitution was healthy, however, called for restraint to save the country's democracy.
Said he "It is also incumbent to take cognisance of the fact that between stubborn defence of position and fearless discussions, there is a nexus of understanding; and that nexus is that Nigeria must be kept as one.
"A lot has been said about the constitutional amendment which is ongoing at the National Assembly, either for or against. But it appears Nigerians are more concerned about what eventually becomes the extant laws that guide their conduct."
The Speaker also urged youths, especially Muslims, all over the country to eschew violence and avail themsaelves of the spiritual opportunity provided by the Ramadan period to imbibe certain virtues that would guide them in living decent lives.
He called on Muslim faithful to use the season of Ramadan to supplicate for the survival of the nation.
"With your prayers, you can change the dwindling fortunes of this country, economically, politically and socially for the better. Your prayers alone can put to stop all the security challenges the country has been contending with. Who knows, perhaps, even with your prayers, the Almighty Allah will get rid of every form of bad leadership that threatens the unity and progress of the country.
"In praying for this country, put it at the back of your mind that you are rebuilding the Nigeria of your dream; the Nigeria where unemployment, economic hardship and poor living condition would be a thing of the past. And that is a country you as future leaders will come to inherit in no distant future," he added.
