Ghana's President John Mahama says his administration will focus more on road construction in the next four years to ease transport and traffic difficulties.

Mahama stated this while inspecting the Awoshie-Pokuase and the Anyaa-Pokuase road projects in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

A statement from the Presidency obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday quoted Mahama as saying that road had become an issue of social tension in the country.

"We are aware of the need for intervention in road construction; this will facilitate movement of people as well as goods and services.

"This intervention targeted for the next four years will also absorb the ever-growing volume of traffic across the country,'' the statement quoted Mahama as saying.

The statement also said that the president had directed that compensations be paid promptly to those whose lands were encroached on in the course of the road projects.

"We need the two road projects to be completed according to schedule; so, we will want work to go on smoothly," he said.

He commended the African Development Bank for its assistance and partnership in the execution of developmental projects in the country.

The statement also quoted Amidu Sulemana, the Minister of Roads and Highways, as saying that work on the two road projects was on course.
