The maiden edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), a brainchild of the National Sports Commission, earlier slated for September is now to hold in December, 2013.

This was made known Tuesday, 6th August, 2013, by the Director in charge of the Grassroots Sports Development (GRSD), Yakmut Al-Hassan in his office, in Abuja.

According to him, the reason for the change is to afford the host adequate time to prepare in line with the new sports now approved for the Games.

The calendar of activities has also been reviewed as follows:

Joint MOC/LOC & State Directors of Sports' meeting         – 27th – 30th Aug.

Entries by Number/Name                                                          – 16th Sept. -1st Oct.

Zonal Eliminations                                                                       – 28th Oct. – 3rd Nov.

Delegates Registration/Joint Technical Meeting                   - 11th – 20th Nov.

Games Proper                                                                                 – 5th – 15th Dec.

Following the new development, the number of sports to feature at the NYG has consequently been reduced from 19 to 15 sports.  The sports are: Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Football, Track & Field, Judo, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Handball, Tennis, Karate and Para Power-lifting.

It will be recalled that the National Council on Sports which held its meeting in Ilorin, Kwara state on the 25th April, 2013 had ratified the hosting of the National Youth Games and subsequently directed the composition of a Modalities Committee to develop an operational framework for the event.
