Over 3,000 buildings including churches, guest houses, filing stations and hospitals amongst others were said to have been illegally erected on lands belonging to public primary and secondary schools across Ogun State. Chairman, State House of Assembly Committee on Education Science and Technology, Hon. Adeyinka Mafe, disclosed this today at a Public hearing on public schools’ land encroachment held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta.
Mafe said, the meeting was meant to end the era of impunity on the part of land speculators and encroachers, stating that after scrutinizing relevant documents of individuals involved, the Assembly would make appropriate recommendations to the state government. While disclosing that about 70 schools were affected across the state, the lawmaker assured that individual cases would be treated on merits, adding that government would ensure that public schools have proper demarcation to stop the illegal activities.
Earlier, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, said the Assembly would not allow anyone erect property on lands belonging to public schools thereby jeopardizing government’s lofty goals at ensuring the provision of qualitative education and other reforms.Adekunbi noted that the forum was convened to address the challenges of encroachment into the properties of educational institutions in the State and to deliberate on how best to resolve the issue, saying that the Assembly took the step to secure the future of the children through access to good and qualitative education being implemented by the Senator Amosun’s administration.
“The sincere commitment of the present administration under the visionary leadership of the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun is no doubt glaring, with the very intensive resources that are being committed to the sector and the various reforms that had taken place. Hence, it will be a disservice to allow encroachment issues jeopardize government’s lofty goals in the sector”, the speaker remarked. He noted that the current administration was working relentlessly to restore the lost glory of the State through transformations in all facets of life including roads, education, health and other social infrastructural facilities.
