Title: MOSCOW 2013: Okagbare breaks medal jinx, thanks God
Post by: Mirror on Aug 12, 2013, 06:31 AM
Blessing Okagbare yesterday dedicated her World Championships silver medal to God after reversing Nigeria's 14-year fortune at the podium.

Okagbare, whose ambition was the gold medal in her medal, had pushed against her USA competitor Britney Reese. But her last jump of 6.69m only trailed Reese who chalked up 7.01 to nick the gold.

The Nigerian athlete, who was the toast of the media at the mixed zone after her jump, said she saw a divine touch to her success as she ended the medal drought that has dogged her country since the Seville 1999 Championships where Gloria Alozie won a silver in the 100m hurdles and Francis Obikwelu got a bronze in the 200m.

"I thank God for using me because it could have been anybody else," the elated Okagbare yelled as she was swarmed by journalists.

"I also thank members of my family, friends and relations for their support," she added.

Serbia Ivena Spanovic won the bronze with 6.82, getting her country's new record to the bargain.

The Nigerian star, however, shut aside the euphoria quickly as she focused on the 100m final scheduled for today.

"I am optimistic of coming off brilliantly and I will give it my all to bring glory to my father land once again," she assured.
