Applications are invited to apply for AUT doctoral scholarships for study commencing in 2014. Each scholarship consists of an annual stipend of NZ$25,000 plus tuition fees and student services levy for up to three years and is currently valued at approximately NZ$95,000. Potential applicants both New Zealand citizens and permanent residents and international students can apply for these scholarships. Applicants must meet the admission criteria for a doctoral programme i.e. a relevant master's degree or a bachelor(honours) degree with first or second class (first division) honours. The scholarship is tenable for up to three years. If a recipient has been enrolled for more than six months at the time of application the scholarship tenure will be reduced accordingly. Eligibility: The scholarships are awarded on academic merit. Recipients of this scholarship will have strong academic references plus an excellent academic record and/or have demonstrated the potential for high quality research. Previous study should include research methodologies papers and an independent research project, including the writing of a report on that research.
-Applicants for the April round must be New Zealand citizens and permanent residents and including Australian citizens; or International students only if the entry degree to the PhD programme was obtained at AUT. Applicants for the October round may be New Zealand citizens and permanent residents; or International students.
-Applicants must meet the normal admission criteria to the doctoral programme, including, minimally, second class (first division) honours or equivalent as stated in the Academic Calendar. However, recipients of this scholarship will normally have the equivalent of first class honours.
-The applicant's proposed field of study must be one where the University can offer supervision. It is advisable that applicants should contact potential supervisors prior to application to confirm the availability of supervision.
-Preference will be given to new applicants to a doctoral programme, including those in provisional candidature at AUT.
Scholarship Open for International Students: New Zealand citizens and permanent residents of New Zealand and international students can apply for these scholarships.

What does it cover? The scholarship covers the following:
-Annual payment of tuition fees (at the domestic rate) plus the Learner Service Levy
-An annual stipend of NZ$25,000 per year.
Selection Criteria: Applications will be shortlisted by faculties who will nominate a faculty shortlist. Recipients will be selected from the faculty nominations by the AUT Scholarships Committee and confirmed by the Vice Chancellor.
-Selection will be based on demonstrated excellence in the following:
-the applicant's academic record (including prizes, awards and any publications)
-the applicant's research proposal
-the applicant's research and/or professional background and any publication record background
-the referees' statements
-Preference will be given to applicants whose research area aligns with the University's strategic plan.

How to Apply: Applying for this scholarship and for the admission into the PhD programme there are two separate processes at AUT. Therefore, if you have not already applied for the PhD programme at AUT you must complete both steps of the combined application process outlined below. If you are an existing PhD student or already have an offer of place go directly to step 2.
(A) Apply for admission into the PhD programme at AUT: The holding of this scholarship is conditional on acceptance into the AUT doctoral programme. As the admissions process may take up to two months to complete it is important prior to applying for this scholarship for:
-Domestic applicants to contact the postgraduate office of the faculty with which you wish to conduct your research for information and advice on the application for study process.
-International applicants to contact phdadmissions@aut.ac.nz for advice regarding the admissions process for international students
(B) Apply for the Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarship: It is strongly advised that you apply for admission prior to applying for these scholarships. If all your previous studies has been done at AUT, or you have already provided correctly certified copies of your documents for admission, you may apply for the scholarship by email using the email address you have provided to AUT during the admission process.
-Download the Scholarship Regulations from the links below and familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria and the conditions of acceptance.
-Download and complete the Application Form
-Complete the two page statement outlining your proposed research in conjunction with your supervisor. Please note this must be two pages only (plus references). If a long document is provided you will be asked to rewrite it.
-Provide your two academic referees with the reference statement template. Referees will be required to submit a confidential report directly to the Scholarships Office by the closing date. This may be by email from a recognized institutional email account.
-Ask your proposed primary supervisor to provide a letter of support. If your supervisor is also a referee they may provide only one statement covering both purposes
-Provide a brief C.V. (maximum three A4 pages)
-Submit your completed application to the Scholarships Office. If you are an existing AUT student you may apply by email from the email address you have in the student record system ARION.
