Post by: The InfoStrides on Aug 18, 2013, 07:31 PM
(http://www.nigeria.gov.ng/images/image.jpg)The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has called on the Nigerian Press to ensure that the public is aware of its responsibility to  the millions of people in need around the world as Nigeria readies for the 2013 edition of the World Humanitarian Day on Monday, August 19, 2013 (http://www.nigeria.gov.ng/x-apple-data-detectors%3A//0).   Kabiru Turaki made this call at a press briefing organized by the National Commission for Refugees in collaboration with the humanitarian affairs session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other Stakeholders.   The Minister stated that those in need desperately require help, but the ability to reach them is miserable and gradually being challenged by risks. "Humanitarian workers have no other agenda than saving lives and delivering the basics of life such as food, water, shelter, medical care and protection for the most vulnerable. Yet in too many places where humanitarians work, rather than being respected, they are targeted," he said.   He noted that the African Union (AU) has deemed it fit to partner in the global initiative which has the theme: "Helping Hands." According to him, through this initiative, the African Union Commission and its partners seek to recognize the valiant efforts of African humanitarian heroes and heroines in the provision of a platform for bringing   their efforts to lime light.   Turaki lauded the collaborative effort of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), the Office of Humanitarian Affairs and other stakeholders for creating the opportunity for the commemoration of World Humanitarian Day in Nigeria.
