Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, expressed delight with the emergence of the first female Speaker in the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Monsurat Sunmonu.
Sunmonu, the only female member of the 32-member assembly was elected speaker at the inaugural sitting of the assembly on Friday in Ibadan, the state capital.
The governor's wife in a statement in Ibadan, said the Speaker's election was merited and an affirmation that the time had come for women in Nigeria to play their rightful role in the development of the society.
According to her, the fact that the Speaker's election is coming at this time is not a coincidence as the Ajimobi government is determined to ensure that women are not relegated to the background in the scheme of things.
Ajimobi urged the Speaker to put a seal on women leadership by steering the state Assembly to the desired harbour, saying Sunmonu's success in office would determine subsequent rating of women in office.
She also admonished other members of the assembly to accord Sunmonu the support she needed to make her tenure a success.
She added that her success was a collective responsibility of both men and women folk.
