The National Sports Commission (NSC) has revealed its readiness to sponsor two athletes from the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to the next Commonwealth Games slated to hold in Glasgow-Scotland in 2014.
The Director-General of NSC, Gbenga Elegbeyele disclosed this on Tuesday 24th September, 2013 when he paid a courtesy visit to the Commandant General of the National Security & Civil Deference Corps, Ade Abolurin in the NSCDC Corporate Headquarters, Abuja.
Gbenga Elegbeleye said that the management of the National Sports Commission decided to make this offer in recognition of the role the organization is playing in the development of sports in Nigeria. He noted that oftentimes the system have not given athletes the commensurate encouragement or the recognition they need to perform optimally.
According to him, "there is no singular organisation that has contributed tremendously to the growth and development of sports in Nigeria in recent time like the NSCDC". He further noted that the best thing that has happened to sports in Nigeria is the NSCDC, adding that the organisation is one of the greatest employers of sportsmen in Nigeria.
He pledged the continued support of NSC to the organisation for its contribution to the advancement of sports in Nigeria and called support from corporate organisations towards sports development in the country; saying government alone cannot fund sports.
In his remarks, the Commandant of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ade Abolurin indicated that the problem of sports development in Nigeria rests on funding. He also urged critical stakeholders in sports to ensure adequate funding of the Commission, stressing that when the NSC is financially encouraged, athletes and coaches as the immediate beneficiaries of such gestures would perform optimally.
The occasion also marked the presentation of "Award of Excellence" to the Commandant of NSCDC for his relentless efforts to the development of sports in Nigeria.
