The Federal Government has urged security agencies to work together as a team to combat the security challenges of Nigeria.
Comrade Abba Moro, the Minister of Interior, who made this known, while declaring open a two-day workshop on Inter-Agency Peace Building Programme at the Civil Defence Academy, Abuja on Thursday, September 19, 2013, noted that with the right orientation, effective synergetic and crime-combating efforts of our security institutions, Nigeria will experience an enduring moment of tranquility, peace and security.
He enjoined the participants to bring to bear the experience and knowledge gained at the workshop in their various organizations and departmental beats, and join hands to make Nigeria a safe haven.
Earlier in his address, the Co-ordinator, Counter-Terrorism Department, Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Major-General Sarikinyaki Bello (Rtd), stated that given the present security challenges in the country, Government has recognized that collaboration is one of the key strategies that will guarantee success in the security domain.
According to him, the National Security Adviser has, therefore, established a platform referred to as the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) with four principal units to facilitate joint training and operations among the security and intelligence agencies, thus encouraging the building of trust, which enables collaboration for peace and national development.
He said the major impediment to collaboration among the agencies is the tendency to serve and sustain exclusive jurisdictions, adding however, that with sustained efforts, the 'new-thinking' (collaboration) will permeate the security sector for a closely-integrated national security architecture.
In his contribution, the Senate Chairman Committee on Interior, Senator Atiku Bagudu, reiterated the need for the agencies to complement each other for peace and security in the nation.
Senator Bagudu also suggested adequate training and provision of basic amenities to enhance the agencies' officials carrier and enable them socialize.
While also speaking in the same vein, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Ade Abolurin, stressed that what informed the workshop is the need to foster inter-agency collaboration in pursuit of a secured state and a peaceful society.
