Sherifat Aralola Olumuyiwa stands out anywhere with her peculiar hair style. Call it weird, odd or strange, but Aralola says it remains part of her aim to carve uniqueness for herself. "I grew up loving Indian films and songs and that influenced my choice of hairdo. In Africa, we don't have long hair, so, I decided to go for long braids – a fusion of African and oriental to achieve my unique look," she told YEMISI ADENIRAN
How does being in a profession meant for men feel?
It really feels good, really good. There is nothing like operating in a world that is seen as not for someone, you know. It is a position or vocation that has been considered sacred for some set of people. It is like breaking a taboo, crossing the red sea, doing some wonders.
And you know what? It feels great. I love the fact that I have become a pace setter in this industry. I feel good that I have made a good mark for myself, carved a niche for myself. Today, I have other female following my footsteps and that is simply a positive achievement. In Africa, men are strictly meant to beat the traditional drums but we, female, are doing the same now. It is a pointer to the saying that whatever a man can do, women can also do even better if we will dedicate ourselves to it.
How convenient is your hairdo?
It is very convenient since it's my choice. No one is forcing me to wear it. It is just my way of further carving a niche for myself. I grew up loving Indian films and songs and that influenced my choice of hairdo. In Africa, we don't have long hair, so, I decided to go for long braids – a fusion of African and oriental to achieve my unique look. It's my own style and it is really working for me.
How then would you describe your style?
It is unique and that which re-defines my person. It is that which expresses my desire, my aim in life, which is to set a good pace.
