Post by: Mirror on Sep 29, 2013, 09:31 PM
Unknown gang of gunmen suspected to be terrorists yesterday killed 15 people in the troubled Southern part of Kadun State, leaving scores of others seriously injured. It was gathered that the killers invaded Zangang, a town in Attakar Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government area of the state and started opening fire on anyone on sight throughout the wee hours of the day.

Other sources also said the shootings continued till around 9 am. A resident in the area who put a telephone call across to our correspondent said casualty figure was still counting as thousands had fled the affected Southern communities to unknown locations. Others, he said, were simply displaced within the areas.

His words: "We are living at the mercy of God in Southern Kaduna; only today, gunmen killed 13 of our brothers and sisters, although the casualties may be more than that because as I am talking to you now, the dead bodies are still counting.

"The attackers came in two phases; they came through the hills side, and another group came through the eastern part of the community. They surrounded the community and started shooting. "They encamped around the village, holed up many villagers and started using both knives and guns to kill them," he recounted.

According to him, the shooting started from 6am to 9am, adding that "it was between those two hours that they were able to do what they did.

"They succeeded in killing villagers and injuring many who are now in hospitals. They burnt down our houses, destroyed our properties," he added.

The 15 people killed according to the resident, included, Christopher Bakwap, Benjamen Ganda, Ladi Madugu, Adam Yakubu, Julius Barnabas, Garba Kushuwah, Martha Musa, Michael Aboi, Gaje Lufuwai, Kefas Yusfu, Dauda Yusu, Joshua Bikau, Andrew Bikai, Sheying Immanuel and Gideon Adamu.

The chairman of the Jema'a council area, Mr. Dan Amos, has appealed to the people to return to their homes as government was committed to rebuilding the damaged homes.

"I am speaking to you here on behalf of Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero. He is working tirelessly to ensure that peace returns. And the security operatives have been drafted here to help contain this situation; please let us live in peace and harmony because there is nothing better than peace.

"I am assuring of security and you should report anything suspicious to them and not take laws into your hands," the council boss urged. Kaduna State's Police Commissioner and the Command's spokesman, Aminu Lawan, did not pick their phones when our correspondent called
