...urges public to pay water rates Efforts by Lagos State government to boost water supply in the state, Thursday, received a boost with the commissioning of Independent Power Plant (IPP) that is solely dedicated to pumping water from two major sources, Iju Works and Adiyan Water Scheme to different parts of the state. This is as Lagos State governor, Bababtunde Fashola, has called on the public to encourage government and the water corporation by paying their rates and taxes promptly. The project is a joint venture between Oando plc and Lagos State Water Corporation, financed by Fidelity Bank plc. Works at the 12.45 megawatts power plant sited at Akute boundary area between Lagos and Ogun State, began in 2008 after Oando, the petroleum marketing company, entered into agreement and signed necessary documents with which it began negotiations with Fidelity for funding of the project. The IPP will operate 20 hours a day and boost supply from Iju and Adiyan Water Works to a combined capacity of 130 million gallons a day. Built at the cost of N4 billion, the IPP which utilises gas is coming soon after the state government commissioned eight mini water works in parts of the state with the capacity for eight million gallons a day.
