: IET Ambition Awards / Travel Awards for Study Tour, Working in Industries & Conferences

Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) UK has various travel awards its members who would like to broaden their professional experience through undertaking study tours, working in industry or attending conferences. The awards are explained below:

1. I J Shelley Travel Grant (5 awards available @ £500)

The I J Shelley Travelling Fund is intended to assist members of the IET to undertake international travel in order to broaden their professional experience perhaps via a study tour, through working in industry or by participating in an international conference or seminar, preferably in communications engineering.  The awards may also assist with travel associated with the presentation of papers at prestigious international conferences, or objectives, which relate to manufacturing techniques. Preference is given to young professionals who, at the early stage of their professional careers, are unable to readily find assistance from conventional sources.

2. IET Travel Grant (5 awards available @ £500)

Enables IET members to travel international to broaden their professional experience perhaps by undertaking a study tour, by working in industry or by participating in an international conference or seminar.

3. D H Thomas Travel Bursary (1 award available biennially @ £500)

The D H Thomas Travel Bursary is intended to provide financial support to IET members who wish to undertake research in Europe (preferably in Germany) related to either to their professional interests (for example, historical or biographical work leading to a publication) or their postgraduate education. The award is open to members wishing to broaden their professional experience through undertaking a study tour, working in industry or participating in a European conference or seminar.

The D H Thomas Travel Bursary was established In memory of David H Thomas who was a member of the Institution for 68 years. Mr Thomas studied in Dresden before the Second World War as a Joseph Swan Scholar of the IET.  For nearly thirty years he was Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

Vital information - before submitting your nomination, please note that:
•   Batches of entries are collated for consideration by the IET Scholarships Committee at intervals throughout the year. Please apply for a Travel Award at least two months before your proposed travels.  (This allows sufficient time for collation of a reasonably sized batch of entries for consideration by the Committee.)  Please remember that it may take more than 2 months for your application to be processed and, although we will make every effort to advise you of whether or not your application has been successful before you depart on your trip, this may not be possible; 
•   If you are not already an IET member then you will need to join the IET prior to submitting an application;
•   Applications should be supported with documentary evidence of the travel intention (i.e. letter from sponsor, or copy of the invitation from the conference organiser, research department, company or academic establishment etc.) Where a visa is required a scanned copy of the relevant document should be enclosed, or confirmation given that this has been sought from the relevant authorities.  Incomplete applications will not be considered; 
•   Applications for travel already undertaken will not be considered;
•   Decisions reached will be regarded as final and correspondence relating to the allocation of awards will not be entered into once the results have been announced;
