The Osun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday gave Governor Rauf Aregbesola a seven-day ultimatum to reverse the decision which merged schools across the state.
The association, in a letter written to the governor dated October 9, 2013, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Osogbo and signed by its Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, warned that "If there is no concrete and sincere step taken before the seven-day ultimatum expires, the Christian Association Of Nigeria (CAN) in Osun State will take further appropriate action".
The association asked the governor to stop further merger of schools and return all mission schools to their original founders.
The association said: "Hence, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on behalf of the entire Christians in Osun State is requesting that the government takes appropriate steps to revert to the status quo within seven days with effect from the date of receipt of this letter.
"We observe that the foundation of the Christian faith is being seriously threatened by some of the state government policies, especially in the educational sector which the church is strongly averse to and not ready to compromise."
The Christian body said the decision was taken after the conclusion of its meeting on October 7, 2013, adding that it, however, appreciates the government's efforts to develop the state, especially in the area of road construction and rehabilitation.
