Diplomat Lists Gains of Jonathan's Transformation at The UNN The  Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan has recorded gains  in five key areas with its overall success set to "become an example of  the possibilities of our indigenous freedom" as well as what the African  can achieve, according to the Ambassador and representative of  Nigeria's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr Umunna  Humphrey Orjiako.

Speaking at the 53rd Founder's Day Lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, October 7, Orjiako listed the gains as

1.     Unbundling of the power sector and admitting private capital in the  generation, transmission and distribution of electricity

2.    Bringing transparency in the acquisition and distribution of agricultural inputs, notably fertilizer

3.    Revival of "dead but crucial sectors of the transportation industry" in railways, airports and inland waterways

4.    Establishing a Sovereign Wealth Fund as strategic investment in our future

5.    Capping loopholes that hitherto facilitated "the worst form of capital flight" out of Nigeria.

Orjiako  said the achievements of the Transformation Agenda "have sustained a  healthy GDP growth rate in the midst of global economic crisis"

The ambassador also called for increased collaboration between  universities and the private sector to "integrate new resources with  enrichment of academic programmes and learning opportunities for faculty  and students" as well as investments for future researches.

Noting  that  "not a single African University made the list in 2012 or prior of  the Top 50 Patent Cooperation Treaty applicant universities",  Orjiako   advocated  enhanced collaboration with industry and private sector.   Such collaboration, he added, "could be a clear path for UNN to blaze  another trail by joining the ranks of patent cooperation treaty  applicants in an era when universities and research institutions are  essentially assessed and ranked by the quality and quantity of IP  applications (Intellectual property, trademarks and industrial designs)  that they file per annum."

The 53rd Founder's Day also coincided with  the 50th Graduation Anniversary of the pioneer graduates of the  Nigerian university system. The 1963 class of the University of Nigeria  enrolled on October 7 1960 and graduated in 1963 as the first graduates  produced by a university in Nigeria.

UNN Attracts Foreign Students to Nigeria At a time many Nigerians  are scrambling for an opportunity to study abroad, the University of  Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN) has, in recent time, been the destination for  foreign graduates who come to further their academic work under a  partnership programme between their universities and the UNN.

Briefing    newsmen during a press conference organised to kick-off events of the  53rd founders' day and golden jubilee of first graduates of UNN, at its  Enugu campus, the Vice-Chancellor of the UNN, Prof. Bartho Okolo said  his administration had made the Institution attractive to foreign  students by upgrading infrastructures, equipping laboratories and  classrooms with modern facilities, and forging collaborations with other  universities.

"The University of my Vision is one with a befitting  environmental ambience and adequate ultra modern infrastructure fitted  with modern cutting edge teaching and research facilities. It is also a  university which collaborates with many reputable universities across  the world in diverse disciplines and one whose faculty and graduates can  compete with their peers from across the globe", he said.

Prof.  Okolo added that since the inception of his administration four years  ago, he and his team had pursued internationalization, adopting the  strategy of revitalising of existing relationships and establishing over  50 new ones. The ties, according to him, were mutually beneficial to  the partnering institutions and the UNN.

"The major tenets of these  collaborations are joint research projects, staff and student exchanges,  shared curriculum, joint applications for research grants, joint  workshops and seminars/conferences as well as training", he said.
