l think the federal government should start up a program to engage beggars who are handicapped. This would enable them to be useful to themselves and the society at large.
As for hawking, poverty is the main reason. The people who engage in hawking needs to survive.
As much as the federal government wants to retain the beauty of the nation's capital, it is pertinent that they face the issue of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria.
Most hawkers survive with the meager sum they get from hawking.
Tribune reports the new development in Abuja metropolis.
Hard times now await beggars and hawkers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as a special task force has been constituted to rid the city of the menace.
The team has also been charged to tackle the issue of illegal structures springing up in Abuja.
FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr Biodun Olorunfemi, who set up the task force, noted that they would be in operation for three weeks.
Part of the terms of reference of the teams, according to him, was to take all necessary measures to achieve the target of retaining the beauty of the nation's capital.
He expressed worry that traffic congestion, street begging and hawking of various dimensions had overtaken the city, adding that it was the intention of the FCT administration to tackle the situation headlong.
The permanent secretary observed that if such repulsive occurrences were allowed to degenerate, they could pose a serious threat to the security and safety of Abuja residents.
He appealed for the cooperation and understanding of the residents so as to enable the team to succeed.
