The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, yesterday warned candidates in the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 16, to respect the rules and ensure a free and fair election.
Speaking during a sensitisation workshop for political parties and stakeholders in the election organised by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Inter Party Affairs in Awka, Jega urged participants to use the platform to renew their commitments to maintain a culture of tolerance, respect for rule of law and eschew violence.
Jega, who was represented by a Commissioner in the INEC, Hajia Amina, admonished supporters of competing parties to conduct themselves peacefully and to remember that political competition is not a war, but an avenue for people to peacefully express their choices through globally recognised democratic channels.
He stated that it is the duty of voters, contestants, party agents, security officials, as well as the commission staff to ensure that the election goes on smoothly without rancour and violence.
Chairman of Inter Party Advisory Committee, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, in his speech called on the political parties to ensure that they comply with the code of conduct and avoid backsliding, blackmail and name calling.
He described the political parties as the primary institutions and key drivers in any democratic society like Nigeria.
The President General of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, Chief Gary Igariwey, reminded the candidates to note that the election is not a war, but a contest that should be free, fair and credible, in which only one person will win.
