Skelewu is undoubtedly one of the biggest songs, like Jaiye Jaiye and Sesan Tizzle's Sho Le, to have been released this year. Its video is however another matter. It has been raising so much dust and continues to do so. Because of it, two top directors have had their names dragged in the mud.
The first, Sesan, for doing a Skelewu video that its owner, Davido, rejected, and the second, Mr Moe Musa, for allegedly copying the idea he used for reshooting the video.
And due to the controversies surrounding the quality and substance of its videos, Skelewu has done what no other song has done. It has brought a lot of focus to bear on music videos and the ongoing public opinion that most Nigerian music videos are not up to international standard.
While the directors have generally escaped the resultant backlashes for their mediocre efforts because the artists don't complain, Davido's public rejection of a video done by Sesan, a director believed to be of international standard, was all it took for everyone to start focusing on directors as being responsible for wack videos and not the artists themselves.
And when another international standard video director, Mr Moe Musa that Davido ran to, to reshoot the video also came up with a video that is still not satisfactory, directors are now being seen as why videos are not up to international standard. One of the big problems with the video is that the Skelewu dance is not really featured in it.
This is a sore point that is not going down well with Skelewu's fans.
And Davido, tired of all the ruckus Skelewu is eliciting, and rumoured to be contemplating doing yet another video, has said it's a free world and that anyone who doesn't like any of the videos doesn't have to watch them.
Also reacting to the harsh backlash he's receiving over the poor video, Mr Moe Musa tweeted that he tried his best so he's not angry or frustrated by its frosty reception.
