No fewer than 720 public secondary schools teachers in Lagos State have been trained on a specially designed mobile capacity building programme on the production and utilization of instructional materials meant for rural and riverine school teachers in the state, the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, has disclosed.

Oladunjoye who spoke yesterday in Lagos at the end of year 2013 edition of the Lagos State Festival of Instructional Materials held at the Millennium Secondary School in Ojodu also noted that another 480 teachers from public secondary schools have been similarly trained on the production and utilization of instructional materials, The Commissioner noted that the importance of instructional material cannot be over emphasized in impacting knowledge in students hence government has invested heavily in the provision of appropriate instruction media in order to help the teachers increase learners' attention, motivate their interest as well as make their lesson clearer to their students.

"Instructional materials increase learners' attention and facilitate desired changes in attitude and behaviour of students. It was in view of the importance of instructional material that this administration invests heavily in the provision of appropriate instruction media to help the teachers increase learners' attention, motivate learners' interest and make their lessons clearer to their students, "' Mrs. Oladunjoye averred.

She opined that the need to develop the capacity of teachers in the state was informed by government's desire to move education to the next level so that students can excel and be on the same level with their contemporaries in other parts of the world. "It is our belief that if we want our students to perform very well, we must take keen interest in upgrading the knowledge of their teachers.

And part of the measures to enhance the teaching and learning process is human capacity development. To this end, we are doing everything humanly possible to move education to the next level so that our children can excel and be on the same level with their contemporaries in other parts of the world," she said.
