..No intention to witch hunt G-7 –Metuh

FROM TAIWO AMODU, AbujaNational Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, yesterday, inaugurated a seven-man disciplinary committee for the party, amidst speculation that the party was poised to reprimand recalcitrant members.

Former transport minister in the Second Republic, Dr Umaru Dikko, is the chairman of the committee while Chief Ebenezer Babatope is the deputy chairman.

Certain stalwarts of the party had, last August, announced a parallel National Working Committee to challenge the leadership of Bamanga Tukur.

Prominent members of the factional group include former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the governors of Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa, Kwara, Adamawa, Rivers and Niger states.

The PDP chairman, while inaugurating the committee assured that his leadership would not witch-hunt anybody, stressing that the committee was a creation of the party's constitution.

"This committee will not witch-hunt anybody, but I advise our party members not to cross the lines. It is important to maintain discipline, it is a cardinal thing which every institution should observe. Without discipline, there will be no party. I thank you for accepting to serve on the committee," he said. Also dismissing insinuation that members of the parallel National Working Committee were the target, the party's National Publicity Scribe, Olisa Metuh, said there was no plan to sanction them.

"Members of the New PDP are not facing disciplinary committee. That is not being contemplated; there is no move to sanction members of G-7 as at today.

"There is move for reconciliation and the doors of the party are open to reconciliation. We believe they are committed to the ideals of the party. We want peace and we want progress, but it must be based on principle of trust and justice," he said.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Dikko, whose voice was barely audible, assured the party's leadership that his committee would not fail in the assignment.
