Post by: Mirror on Nov 06, 2013, 11:31 AM
Activities of the Boko Haram Islamic sect which had threatened the peace and unity of the country made the Federal Government to take a firm decision last week on the need to intensify its collaboration with the governments of Niger and Cameroun in the joint patrol of their common borders to tighten security.

Speaking at the end of the meeting of the Board of National Boundary Commission, NBC, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Nurudeen Muhammed said that joint patrol of the borders became imperative to check the influx of people from neighbouring countries in order to ensure peace and stability in the country.

The Director-General of the NBC, Ahmed Muhammed, stated that the commission has put in place all that was needed to make Nigeria and Cameroun work together to ensure security and proper resettlement of the people of Bakassi. According to him, the government has released funds on two occasions for the resettlement exercise.

The Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, also said that in order to check frequent boundary crises among states, local governments and communities in the country, the Federal Government would take steps to properly demarcate Nigeria's internal boundaries.

According to him, it was discovered at the fifth meeting of the National Boundary Commission that a lot of work had been done at the level of the nternational boundary of Nigeria but within Nigeria internally, among states and among local governments, a lot of work still have to be done because most areas are vulnerable to boundary disputes that is causing internal crisis.
