Title: Senate Approves Jonathan’s Emergency Rule Extension Request
Post by: Shola Sholaz on Nov 07, 2013, 10:58 PM
THE Senate Thursday, granted the request of President Goodluck Jonathan for extension of current state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
.
This is even as it summoned all Service Chiefs and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to appear before it to give current state of security situation as well as successes or otherwise of the emergency rule in the affected states since its declaration six months ago.
.
No date for their apearance was given just as no reason was given for inclusion of the Foreign Affairs Minister in the invitation.
.
The upper legislative chamber said its action was to give "more time to the military to restore full and lasting peace to the three states" even as it noted that commendable progress had been recorded in the affected states.
.
But the Senate, at a plenary, presided by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said it approve the extension of the emergency rule on the three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe state "on the same terms and conditions as earlier approved and gazetted."
